Birding

This is a new pages for birders that I’m going to try to periodically update with results from birding trips around the park.  Please note that I am an ameteur birder so if you see some dubious sightings or I miss something, please let me know:

The week of January 22:  A Glossy Ibis was hanging around the central pond, joined by a colony of black necked stilts, and the great horned owl that was nesting over the Marcello Canal abondoned her nest.  One male wood duck was spotting standing guard over a box along the water in the morning hours.

Monday, January 30, 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. weekly birding program, wave pool lot to middle bridge in the picnic area:  I was joined by the camp host, Mr. Dave Simon, who took some beautiful photos I hope to share when I get copies.  The highlight of the morning was a pair of Red-sholdered hawks who were constructing a nest in the picnic area.  We also saw a small flock of Carolina Parakeets; pretty to look at, but after living uptown for several years and being woken to the sound of them feeding outside my window, far from my favorite bird.  Around the nature center, there were many small birds active this morning.  I’m horrible at identifying sparrows and warblers, but I was able to make a positive ID on an Eastern bluebird, Yellow Rumped Warblers, Swamp sparrows, and what I believe was a palm warbler.  Also there were a couple of Belted Kingfishers dive bombing the fish in search of their breakfasts!

Bird Sightings:

N. Mockingbird, N. Cardinal, Fish Crow, Am. Crow, Palm Warbler, Yellow Rumped Warbler, Swamp Sparrow, E. Bluebird, Belted Kingfisher, Coot, Mallard, G. Egret, Gadwall, Tricolored Heron, Little Blue Heron, Great Blue Heron, Pie-billed Grebe, Red Sholdered Hawk (nesting pair), Wood ducks, Ring gull, White Ibis, Snowy Egret, Black Crowned Night Heron, American Robin.  Also spooted a Red Tailed Hawk later in the day.
