Programs by Request

The Park’s trained interpretive ranger offers special programs to any group of 10 or more. We can also bring the program to you if you cannot visit our site. We have done programs for garden clubs, scouts, schools, rotary clubs, church groups, family reunions, 4-H, universities, day cares, and bird clubs just to name a few.  Please call or email us to schedule a program for your group at 504-736-7155 or bayousegnette_int@crt.la.gov.

School Program Information

Our trained interpretive ranger offers free programs throughout the school year for all students from preschool to college, and home school groups.

Programs may include hikes, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on activities, crafts, films, and games. Program topics range from a general nature hike to specific topics such as: tree identification, birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, wetlands, habitats, forests, food webs, and many more.  We will work with teachers to develop programs on any nature topic.

 Registration

Reservations are required for all programs at least two weeks in advance. Anyone interested in scheduling a program can call Tuesday thru Saturday from 8:00am to 4:30pm at 504-736-7155. You may also email your request to bayoysegnette_int@crt.la.gov. Please have the following information when you call or email:

-preferred date and time

-grade and class size

-program request

-name of school

-name, address, and phone number of contact

-special needs

Class rules

Please have adequate adult supervision for your class. At least 1 adult per 10 students is recommended. Large groups will be broken up into smaller groups for hikes and programs. Teachers are responsible for supervising their students while at the Park.

Bayou Segnette State Park is a wildlife refuge and as such does not allow collecting of any kind. Help preserve the integrity of our State Park for all– take only pictures and leave only footprints.

Fees

All educational programs are FREE for school groups. Large groups requesting  crafts may be asked to bring supplies.

Lunch

Groups may picnic in Bayou Segnette State Park’s many free picnic areas. Pavilions will require reservations and fees. To reserve a pavilion call 1-877-CAMP-N-LA.  Some pavilions may be available without a reservation for school groups only during school hours, check with the park’s office by calling 1-888-677-2296 or 504-736-7140.

Clothing and Weather

Students and teachers should wear clothing and footwear suitable for hiking and outdoor activities.  Long pants and close-toed shoes are recommended. Flip-flops are strongly discouraged. Be prepared for biting insects.

If it rains on the day of your field trip guided hikes will be changed to an indoor program.

Restrooms

Time should be allowed before and after your program for restroom breaks.
